Predictions for Week 7

Well, another week has passed and its time for me to get my prediction coat on! I’m still basking in my 6 correct predictions from last week. Granted 4 of those were fairly straight-forward, but the two score-draws have left me feeling all warm inside…
Anyway to this weekend’s games, and after the European exploits of midweek, the task of picking some winners is a very tricky one…

Saturday

Bolton vs Liverpool
Bolton have conceded only three goals so far this season in the league, and a shut-out on Saturday would mean a fifth successive clean sheet in the Premiership for Big Sam’s boys. Scoring however has been an issue, with Nicholas Anelka yet to find the net in the league. But form is temporary, and class is always present. Anelka will find his form soon enough, and the goals will come.
Liverpool have just had a very tiring battle with Galatasaray in their Champions League group, and no doubt Rafa will change his starting line-up for the umpteenth time in a row! Dirk Kuyt is beginning to find his feet, and I expect him to deliver the goods on Saturday, after Crouch’s spectacular heroics in midweek. An away win, but a narrow one.
Dave’s YTM Prediction: Away Win

Charlton vs Arsenal

Charlton boss Iain Dowie is having a tough time of it at the moment, and now probably wasn’t the best time for the visit of the Gunners, who are definitely firing on all cylinders. Charlton haven’t won in three successive Premiership games, but they have come up against the three form teams in the league in Chelsea, Pompey and Villa. Dowie will be looking for Hasselbaink and Darren Bent to propel his side up the table.
The Arsenal have slowly come to terms with the new pitch dimensions of the Emirates stadium, and this has meant that away victories are more important than ever, until they make their new home a fortress. Thierry Henry is back in goal-scoring form, with two in two, and confidence will be high enough for them to force their way past this Charlton side.
Dave’s YTM Prediction: Away Win

Chelsea vs Aston Villa
Chelsea find themselves on top of the Premiership, and after not playing that well in the first games of the season. The form of Didier Drogba must be pleasing for Mourinho, after paying £24 million and seeing little return last season. But the Portuguese mastermind kept faith, and has seen Drogba score some great goals this season so far.
Aston Villa are a new team under Martin O’Neill, with only the one new addition. O’Neill has solidified the defence, and given youngsters like Luke Moore and Gabriel Agbonlahor the chance to impress, which they have taken with both hands. However, I feel this Chelsea test has come too soon, and fully expect Chelsea to be top of the table on Monday morning.
Dave’s YTM Prediction: Home Win

Everton vs Man City
So far this season Everton are unbeaten, and are looking far from goal-shy at home, scoring seven in their past three games. Goodison Park is quickly becoming a very harrowing place for teams to visit, and the same can be said for the visit of City on Saturday.
Since Man City’s battling performance in their 1-0 victory over Arsenal, they seem to have lost track and are struggling for results. Three defeats in a row has put a concerted amount of pressure on Stuart Pearce, and I fear that will have increased by 5pm on Saturday. Andy Johnson and co. will prove too strong for a goal-leaking Man City.
Dave’s YTM Prediction: Home Win

Sheffield United vs Middlesbrough
Sheffield United manager Neil Warnock will be wondering how he can get a victory in the Premiership. Being a Leeds fan, I’m not exactly crying over Sheff U’s poor start to the season, but they do seem to be at least competing for points. Saturday’s match-up will be difficult, and Warnock will be looking to his key men, Phil Jagielka and Rob Hulse, in an attempt to start October with a win under his belt.
Middlesbrough’s defensive revival took a knock last weekend with a home defeat to Blackburn. They will be looking for a clean sheet this weekend, and the dominant Jonathan Woodgate will be the key to this. Boro drew their last two away matches in the league, and a safe bet would be for that to happen again.
Dave’s YTM Prediction: Goalless Draw

Sunday

Blackburn vs Wigan
Over the past week, Blackburn have started to look more and more like the defensively stifling team of last season, with an away victory at Boro and then a home victory in Europe. If Mark Hughes can steady his defence, he certainly has the striking options to hurt teams.
Wigan have been very indifferent this season, their last two games being prime examples. A gutsy away draw against a strong Everton side was followed by a distinctly deflating home draw against struggling Watford. Paul Jewell is quickly realising that the second season is always harder than the first, and I predict another difficult afternoon in this Lancashire derby.
Dave’s YTM Prediction: Home Win

Man United vs Newcastle
The mighty Red Devils have suffered a couple of setbacks in the past couple of weeks in the league. They lost their 100% record to Arsenal, and then couldn’t break down a solid Reading defence and had to settle for a draw. However, an assured performance and an away victory in Europe may have instilled United with a bit more confidence.
Newcastle will be feeling very much the same way. A draw last weekend against Everton was not a great result, but two goals from new-boy Obafemi Martins put them into the UEFA Cup group stages. They will be in high spirits going into this game, but I feel that Man United will have the extra yard on the day, and walk away with three points.
Dave’s YTM Prediction: Home Win

Tottenham vs Portsmouth
It is possible that both Ledley King and Dimitar Berbatov will be available for the visit of Pompey to White Hart Lane this Sunday. If they make it, then Spurs will feel that they have every chance of getting three points. King is by far the more important of the two, as without him the Tottenham rearguard looks less than assured.
Portsmouth’s great start to the season suffered a setback on Monday with a home defeat to a dogged Bolton side. They will be looking to get back on track. I expect that Harry Redknapp will look to involve Andy Cole in proceedings, and I would not bet against him scoring if he does. This will be a close game, with not a lot in it, and I’m on the fence.
Dave’s YTM Prediction: Score Draw

West Ham vs Reading
West Ham have had a very disappointing start to the season. September is a month that Alan Pardew will want to forget, and he will be looking to the first game of October, against his old club, as a chance to get a much needed victory. Tevez and Mascherano have unsettled the side, but they are class players, and they should settle in sooner rather than later.
Reading took a point and a lot of confidence from the Man United game, and will be looking to take advantage of the Hammers’ poor form at the moment. Kevin Doyle is the man of the moment for Reading, and he will be looking to add to his tally of three goals so far this season. I predict a tough test for the Hammers at home, and a fair point the reward for the tenacious Royals.
Dave’s YTM Prediction: Score Draw

Monday

Watford vs Fulham
Forget what Aidy Bothroyd is saying to the press… Watford need a win. If they don’t get it soon they will find themselves ‘doing a Sunderland’, and struggling all season long. They have talent in their ranks, with the likes of Ashley Young and Marlon King good enough to perform at this level. Home games against the likes of Fulham are the games they need to get results from to stay up.
Fulham have their injury problems, with both Jimmy Bullard and Boa Morte on the sidelines. Wayne Routledge has made a promising start to his Fulham career, and will be the main contributor to attacks on Monday night. I was lucky enough to go and see Fulham vs Chelsea last Saturday and the Cottagers are a good team. However, the absence of Boa and Bullard are massive. I expect a spectacle of good premiership football, with the result too close to call.
Dave’s YTM Prediction: Score Draw

Well, there you have it. If you have any comments about any of these guestimates please feel free. I think I may have a few winners in there!

Cheers and good luck to Leeds at the weekend!

October Preview - Some Thoughts from YTM HQ

Entry deadline: 1.45pm on Sunday 1st October

With the first of the month falling on a Sunday and with only 5 games being played on Saturday 30th September it means that we have a split in the fixture list with 10 teams playing 4 times in October and 10 teams only playing 3 times.

It seems obvious to concentrate on the teams who play 4 times:

Blackburn Rovers, Fulham, Manchester United, Newcastle United, Portsmouth, Reading, Tottenham Hotspur, Watford, West Ham United and Wigan Athletic.

When searching for multiple clean sheets it could pay to focus on 3 of those 10 teams who have underperformed so far this season:

Fulham - CHA and WIG at home, WAT and AST away
Tottenham Hotspur - POR and WHU at home, AST and WAT away
West Ham United - REA and BLA at home, POR and TOT away

Now it's unlikely that all 3 of these teams will turn their seasons around in October but there is a good chance that 1 of them will transform their fortunes and go and keep 3 clean sheets in the month. Which one? Well, who knows but our money is on Spurs.

Turning our attention to strikers who might go on a decent run of form here is our shortlist of players to keep an eye on.

1) H Camara. WIG. £6m. Scored his first of the season last weekend. Capable of a purple patch as proved by his tally of 114 last year.

2) S Nonda. BLA. £3m. Scored in his first start last weekend and looks a decent addition to Sparky's squad.

3) K Doyle. REA. £3m. Penalty taker who looks a decent favourite to be the bargain YTM striker for 06/07.

4) S Ameobi. NEW. £5m. 2 goals in 5 starts and pretty much a definite starter if fit.

5) B Mwaruwari. POR. £4m. Has started all 6 games so far this season ad with 2 goals and a KC is going well.

An interesting element of Octobers fixtures' is the amazing number of local matches (not strictly derbies) that take place:

Blackburn play Wigan and Bolton.
Bolton play Manchester United and Blackburn.
Charlton play Watford and Fulham.
Fulham play Charlton and Wigan.
Liverpool play Blackburn and Manchester United.
Manchester United play Liverpool, Wigan and Bolton.
Tottenham play West Ham and Watford.
Watford play Fulham, Tottenham, Arsenal and Charlton.
Wigan play Manchester United, Manchester City and Blackburn.

As well as being good news for travelling fans this could well result in a number of cagey low-scoring games.

That's it for now - good luck doing the research that could lead to a £10,000 windfall!

How to Win £10,000!

Our Top Tips on How to Win Manager of the Month:

1) Leave it late. Register your teams as close to the entry cut-off (1.45pm on Sunday 1st October is the next one) as possible. The later you leave it the more you will be benefit from latest form and injury news.

2) Memorise the calendar below. This contains the key entry cut-off dates.

3) Study the fixture list. Not all teams play the same amount of games in any one month. The more a team plays the more YTM points their players should score.

4) Home or Away? Some teams are awesome at home and lousy on the road. Take this into account when studying the fixture list and picking your players.

5) The Purple Patch. Confidence is a great thing particularly if you’re a Premier League striker. Focus on players who are finding the back of net and not the stands!

6) The Block Defence. Consider going for defenders and a goalkeeper from the same team. It's high risk but if they keep a string of clean sheets you could be in the money!

Here’s your all important monthly calendar:

Month - Registration deadline
October - Sunday 1st October at 2.45pm
November - Saturday 4th November at 12.30pm
December - Saturday 2nd December at 12.30pm
January - Monday 1st January at 12.30pm
February - Saturday 3rd February at 12.30pm
March - Saturday 3rd March at 12.30pm
April - Friday 6th April at 2.15pm

NB. These dates are subject to any changes in the fixture list.

Teams start scoring from the Saturday after we receive them. The weekly entry cut-off is 12.30pm on Saturdays - except for October, January and April.

New teams will continue to score points for the remainder of the season after they have been registered. For example if you register a new team on 8th September you’ll have 8 chances to win a monthly competition. The same team will also accumulate points for the overall season-long game.

So what are you waiting for? Study those fixture lists and get registering some all-conquering monthly teams!

Team Of The Week 5

Here is the graphic for the team of the week from the games last weekend. The big scorers were Paul Scharner of Wigan, whose 2 goals meant big points for anyone who had him in their team, and Morten Gamst Pedersen, who contributed to Blackburn's 4-2 defeat of Man City with a goal and two KCs.

Three of the back four this week got there due to them helping their team to clean sheets. This proves the YTM philosophy that clean sheets win prizes, as you can't rely on defenders scoring goals to get you points every week.

YTM HQ

Next Weekend's Fixtures: Predictions...

Saturday

Arsenal vs Sheffield Utd
The Gunners had a massive morale-boosting victory against Man United last Sunday, and they will be looking to build on that against a Sheffield side still trying to find their feet in the top division. Rob Hulse is a proven threat to any defence, but Toure and company should be able to produce another clean sheet. Both Adebayor and Rosicky scored their first goals for the club last week, and they will be hoping to push forward and become regular scorers for the North London boys, starting against the Blades.
YTM Prediction: Home Win

Aston Villa vs Charlton
Two managers at new clubs are on show at Villa Park this weekend. Martin O’Neill must be content with the start Villa have had to the season, and will be looking to push on with a victory against the Addicks. Charlton boss Iain Dowie will be looking to find some stability in his starting line-up, and goals from the pairing of Jimmy Hasselbaink and Darren Bent. Villa’s defence will be the key factor in this game, and watch out for new-signing Stilian Petrov stealing the points from midfield.
YTM Prediction: Home Win

Fulham vs Chelsea
The South-West London derby is upon us again, and Fulham will be looking for a repeat of their 1-0 victory last season. However, Chelsea are certainly no pushovers, and the loss of Jimmy Bullard is a massive blow for the Cottagers’ chances. I have been to a couple of games at the Cottage this season, and the atmosphere will certainly act as a 12th man for Fulham, but I fully expect Chelsea to be too strong, especially down the wings, where Robben and Wright-Phillips could have field days against the likes of Rosenior and Queudrue.
YTM Prediction: Away Win

Liverpool vs Tottenham

Both these massive clubs have had shaky starts to their seasons, and will be looking at this game as another opportunity to kick-start their push for a Champions League place. Liverpool battled well against Chelsea last week, with new signing Dirk Kuyt hitting the post with a thunderous effort. Tottenham on the other hand were booed off the pitch at White Hart Lane after a boring goalless draw against Fulham. Rafa Benitez is claiming that it is only a matter of time before his strikers start banging the goals in, and Kuyt and Bellamy do seem to be communicating well. Expect the unexpected from Benitez in terms of line-up and another hard day at the office for Martin Jol.
YTM Prediction: Home Win

Man City vs West Ham

The buzz following the arrival of Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano has died out at Upton Park, as the West Ham fans have realised that the arrival of the Argentinean duo has, in the short term, done more harm than good to the team. Boss Alan Pardew is unsure as to what his best eleven are, and the feeling of expectation has been replaced by a flat uncertainty. Stuart Pearce is beginning to feel the heat at Eastlands, as his City side have not got off to a great start this term, and Pearce’s signings are not proving to be worth the money they cost. He needs his team to dig in deep and get some positive results, or he may be the first managerial casualty of the Premiership this season. With two teams who can play brilliantly well and astonishingly bad, it certainly is fence-sitting time at YTM HQ!
YTM Prediction: Score Draw

Middlesbrough vs Blackburn

There is only one name buzzing around the Riverside at the moment, and that name is Jonathon Woodgate. His first two performances for the club have been no less than perfect. He is proving to Real Madrid and the world that he is truly a world-class defender, who has single-handedly solidified a shaky Boro backline. On the other hand, Blackburn’s new defender Andre Ooijer is having the season from hell. Own goals and conceded penalties have made September an unpleasant month in the Ooijer hotel room (I assume he hasn’t got a house yet…). However, I feel that eventually, when he gets to grips with the pace of the English game, he will prove to be a smart signing by Hughes. Hopefully this will not be too late! Expect Woodgate to once again shine, and Yakubu to do the business at the other end in a close, and not very pretty affair.
YTM Prediction: Home Win

Reading vs Man United

Reading have made a good start to the Premiership campaign, and will be looking forward to lining up against the likes of Rooney and Ronaldo. Boss Steve Coppell will know that these are not the games they have to win to stay up, and that anything from games against the top teams would be a bonus. Reading will go out, and play to their strengths, utilising the influential pair of Sidwell and Seol as much as possible. However, Man United will be seething after Arsenal’s smash and grab last Sunday, and Reading must prepare to face a furious backlash. I fancy Reading to be the one promoted team that survives this season, but I do not expect them to get anything from the wounded beast of Old Trafford.
YTM Prediction: Away Win

Wigan vs Watford

Last weekend Wigan were saved by two goals from Defender Paul Scharner, and snatched a draw against Everton at Goodison. Watford met their match in Villa ‘keeper Thomas Sorensen, and played out a goalless draw. A point each last week, and both teams will be looking to build on indifferent starts to the season this weekend with a crucial victory. Scharner again is the key man for Wigan, as his aerial ability makes him a good defender and a formidable presence in the opponent’s area. For Watford, Marlon King is yet to set the Premiership alight, and last season looks like it was a flash in the pan. However, given the right ammunition from superb prospect Ashley Young, and we could see a goal on Saturday for King.
YTM Prediction: Score Draw

Sunday

Newcastle vs Everton

Everton have had an excellent start to the Premiership season, thanks in no small part to the goal-scoring talents of Andy Johnson. His five goals in five games makes him the current top scorer in the league, and he will be looking to stay there for the whole season. Newcastle recorded a very confident 2-0 victory away to West Ham last Sunday, with new boys Damien Duff and Obafemi Martins getting on the scoresheet. There is every chance that a partnership could flourish between these two, as Duff has the creativity and flair, whereas Martins has the strength and pure pace. Whether they will get the chance to show their stuff this Sunday remains to be seen, as Everton’s defensive pairing of Yobo and Lescott are no pushovers. My money is on Johnson to open up the Newcastle defence, with the help of the mercurial Tim Cahill. However, I never write the Toon army off, and I’m going for a draw.
YTM Prediction: Score Draw

Monday

Portsmouth vs Bolton

The highly publicised transfer ‘bungs’ saga has pointed fingers at both managers on show at Fratton Park on Monday night. They will be looking to put that to one side and concentrate on what could be a vital game in front of the cameras. Portsmouth have yet to concede a goal in the Premiership this season, and Bolton defence is looking more solid than ever, thanks to influential players such as Gary Speed and Ivan Campo. Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp will be looking for another victory to regain top spot in the league, whereas Sam Allardyce will be hoping to keep a clean sheet against tricky opposition. I predict that Monday night will be a defending showcase, which unfortunately doesn’t make for good television.
YTM Prediction: Goalless Draw

Any thoughts about these predictions? Think that Fulham will turn over Chelsea, or Reading will get something against Man Utd? Post your opinions here and then mock me on Monday morning!

Do you agree with these predictions? If not why not send us your thoughts?

YTM HQ

Beware the knee-jerk reaction......

So no doubt lots of you are rushing to sign David James, various Portsmouth defenders, Kanu and Zamora in Transfer Window 1......?

These signings would be known at YTM HQ as "Knee-Jerks" - players who have been on a run of good form and are hastily transferred in to teams because they are bound to keep the run going.

Although they could be great signings (anything is possible in football) it's our feeling that a "Knee-Jerk" more often than not fails to live up to expectations.

Taking the above player examples here's some thinking:

1) Portsmouth have not played Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Man Utd or Spurs yet.
2) If you want your transfers to be a success over the long term look forward rather than back and consider who your potential goalkeeper and defenders have not played against yet.
3) Portsmouth signed another 2 strikers - Andy Cole and R M Douala - before the transfer window closed.
4) Whilst Kanu is on fire at the moment expect Harry to rotate his strikers in an effort to keep them fit. The tall Nigerian is susceptible to injury so he won't be playing every game.
5) No matter what Alan Pardew says Carlos Tevez will start most of West Ham's games up front.
6) Bobby Zamora will have a job on his hands to keep ahead of Harewood, Cole, Sheringham and eventually Ashton as Carlos' preferred partner.

So there you go - a few thoughts to help (or confuse!) your transfer strategy.

To help a bit more here is how Darren Ingram of Playmouth won £120,000 playing YTM last season:

Starting XI: P Cech, G Barry, J Terry, A Del Horno, W Gallas, M Carrick, F Lampard, T Sinclair, S Kuqi, R Earnshaw, Mido.

TW1: Barry out for Stalteri. Carrick out for Essien. Earnshaw out for Bent. Mido out for RVN.

TW2: Essien out for Bullard. Sinclair out for Pedersen. Kuqi out for Harewood. RVN out for Henry.

TW3: Cech out for Reina. Del Horno out for Finnan. Pedersen out for Gerrard.

TW4: Gerrard out for Nolan.

A faultless (apart from maybe the final transfer) example of how to make transfers......The ones in TW2 are particularly impressive.

Good luck!

August Team of The Month - More thoughts...

D James
Portsmouth - £3.5m
18 Points
Who would have thought that Englands ex number 1 who would be enjoying life so much on the south coast after his surprise move from Manchester City. He's currently 10 points better than any other keeper.

J Terry
Chelsea - £8.5m
20 Points
Slightly more expensive than last season but his early season form seems to have justified the price rise. A must for any YTM manager.

O Mellberg
Aston Villa - £5m
15 Points
Enjoying a new lease of life under Martin O'Neil at Villa Park. Likes to get forward and bag the odd goal. Could be a popular pick in Transfer Window 1.

M Silvestre
Manchester United - £7m
15 Points
A big points scorer if he plays. Not sure he's one of Fergie's first XI if everyone is fit. Expect Heinze to be ahead in the pecking order when he's back.

L Primus
Portsmouth - £3m
15 Points
One of Harry's favourites. A rock-like figure at the heart of Pompey's impressive defence. A steal at £3m.

F Lampard
Chelsea - £9m
20 Points
Struggling for England but as good as ever in the blue of Chelsea. He's expensive but you can you do without him? We doubt it.

J Bullard
Fulham - £5.5m

The new hero of Craven Cottage. Wigan will miss him badly. Expect Jimmy to be challenging for the top 5 YTM midfielders come the end of the season.

D Francis
Watford - £3m

Under used by Paul Jewell last term. Will be a regular at Watford and will challenge Marlon King to be their top YTM player.

L Saha
Manchester United - £6.5m

A popular choice and looking excellent value at £6.5m. Will only benefit from Rooney's return from suspension. Fergie will be praying he stays fit.

West Ham - £5m

Stunning start to the season. Wonder what he reckons to the arrival of Tevez? Be wary of the knee-jerk.....
